Happy Valentine’s Day

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

Happy Valentine’s Day! Just showing a simple, cheapy bit of wall art that I made to celebrate the day. The square background is a small canvas – the sort you buy from hobby or art stores for acrylics, etc. The letters are wooden ones I bought from a craft store. You could use chipboard or cut your own from anything you like! Just glued on. I put a couple of picture hooks in the back and – voilà – nice piece of wall art! Maybe will paint the letters with a soft-wash white or light grey but am happy with the simplicity of the effect.

And the object of my desire? (apart from Mr Tree, of course! He is my heart) A circular foot attachment! My Valentine’s present from Mr Tree! This will stitch circles – normal straight stitch AND  decorative stitches! Just take the bobbin plate off and clip the square endy bit in its place. How Spin Me Right Round Baby is that??! I am WOW over this.

Finally, another project on the go… Bought the lightshade from a Charity shop for €2.00. Perfectly clean and excellent condition. I cut out a wild rabble of butterflies (I looked up the collective noun for butterflies and apparently it is ‘rabble’. WTH? Doesn’t sound right!) and glued them on.
I’m actually making a lamp and the base needs some drilling work and is glass based so am a bit nervous…  but I intend filling it with a long string of LED lights and want to hide the wiring.

In the meantime, have a very happy day and enjoy time with the one you love.

Papier mache flowerseller

Sunday, December 2nd, 2012

First posting for December and time really is flying now! Just three weeks to go and it seems people are going mad in the shops. Must get so-and-so something… that’s something… will get that… it’s the pressure just getting to everybody.

Thankfully,  Mr Tree and I did the big shopping last week. I am made up that I found something he’d been looking for and hadn’t been able to find so it’s the present of glory! A few bits to get but if I can’t get them, it’s no biggie. How’s that for serenity? (Or gloaty head!)

I’ve been taking my tips from the telly – can’t go wrong if you listen to the adverts, can you?  When it’s all over am going to apply to Mastermind. My specialist subject will be the various signs of skin aging and fatigue. Apparently, men have 5 signs of skin fatigue and women have 10 signs of aging.  Who knew?! Men tire but women get old!

Am laughing my head off listening to ‘I’m Sorry I haven’t a Clue’  on the radio. The panel have had to come up with the Entomologist’s Film Club selection – here are a few:

Lady Chatterley’s Larva

Born Flea

Cockroach Orange

The Bluebottle Brothers

Anyway, on to my posting for December. I made the dolly in the picture from papier mache and a little bit of paper clay for the nose and hands. The basic structure, or armature, was made from a polystyrene egg for the head and garden wire for the arms and legs. The papier mache is a mix of plain flour, water and salt with roughly torn newspaper laid down in layers over the armature. The dolly was painted with acrylics then dressed.

I’ll write it all up over the next few days as it is simple, cheap and the kids can join in. The downside is that you need some time to let it dry before you can paint or decorate, but, the end result is sweet, unique and truly yours. This dolly was the first I’d ever made and one thing I have learned is to think about the stance of the figure at the armature stage and not afterwards…

The clothes were literally bits of hessian and odd notions from  my sewing basket and cost nothing. The  flowers and little basket are bought items AND needed hot glue to fix them … got finger tips like ET’s now. Glow in the dark, as well – at least they throb like they do. Hot glue burns like bloody Napalm.

I was going to make a Little Match Girl as a Christmas decoration but the story is too sad to think about. Especially when you know there are too many homeless people out there facing a bleak and comfortless Christmas. Hans Christian Anderson wrote so many sad stories. The Grimm’s brothers wrote stories that generally ended with everyone getting their just desserts and got what was coming to them, but HCA… always so tragic and sad.

Anyhow, am going to make a couple more with a Christmassy theme maybe selling nuts or gingerbread men…and count my blessings that I have much to be thankful for and make a donation to St Vincent  to help those less fortunate.

I hope you are blessed and looking forward to Christmas and may trouble be far from your doorstep.

Paper Posies

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Lots to post if I get some time. Is it worth mentioning the weather? I don’t think so. Least said is probably for the best! They say Ireland would be beautiful if we could put a roof on it, ha ha.

I’ve been making some paper posies. They don’t take long and don’t cost much in the way of materials – most crafters have lengths of ribbon lying around and we all have glue! Bet you’ve tried every brand on the market; I know I have.

The first one I made, I used hot glue. How I didn’t end up in ER I just don’t know! The ends of my fingers had lots of little blisters by the time I’d finished – and the hot glue didn’t half hurt.

1. The pretty frill is a little posy maker from a florists. Get one of those as the mount for everything else.

2. Take a longish rectangle of newspaper – just folded and torn, no need for finesse.

3. Dampen it with a plant mister or sprinkle with wet fingers so it becomes soft and pliable.

4. Fold the sides-together until it is about a centimetre wide.

5. Twist it into a ‘rope’. Get it taut without over- twisting (so it doesn’t tear).

6. Form the twisted ‘rope’  into a circle – make sure it fits in the shape of the florist’s posy maker-and press the rope ends together. If it’s too big, you can always cut it shorter later. Just don’t make it too small.

7. Put it in the microwave (just the ‘rope’ ) for about 30s to 1 min or just leave it to dry naturally.

8. Glue the ends together so you have a hoop.

9. Get your paper for making the flowers together. I got two to three out of a sheet of A4. I like to vary the sizes to add interest. The templates are all over the internet – just Google till you find the ones you like. Most are extremely easy! Mine are made from spirals that are rolled from the outside in.

I roll them then bounce them in my hands a couple of times to relax the curl until I’m happy with the shape. Then glue the end of the spiral onto the bottom of the flower to finish them off. Make a whole bunch of them!

10. Get your rope and glue the flowers on the top and sides, make sufficient to hide the newspaper underneath – newspaper showing underneath is not a good look – and arrange them till you’re happy.

You could just make a floral wreath and not stick them to the posy maker at all – just add a fat ribbon bow and a ribbon loop to hang it up with, glue them on and you’re good to go.

11. If you’re making the full posy, glue the rope onto the posy maker.

12. Get some thin ribbon, form a loop and glue to the back of the posy maker.

13. Get some fat ribbon, make a bow and glue in between the floral arrangement and the posy maker. You may need to glue a tab of ribbon to allow the bow to sit a little below the flowers (I did).

14. A quick spritz  of spray glue and a shower of glamour dust for pazzazz and sparkle and you’re done!

Floral wreath or pretty posy!

Hope you like and have a go at making some yourself. You can always show me your pictures; I would love to see them. Any questions, just drop me a line.

Get your skates on!

Friday, July 6th, 2012

Saw these long skate boots on michele made me blog yesterday and HAD to make a pair. They are so stinkin’ cute and just perfect accessories for a little present wrapped in chicken scratch paper (think I gave away  the ABR for this graphic a while ago so you could make your own).

I just LOVE them! You can just see the heel of a red pair in the top-right of the pic… which means there’s a production line going on cos these will be perfect as tree decs for Christmas, as gift tag ornaments, without the skates will dress up any girlie present. I had to get my skates on!

BUT why stop at Christmas?! Chop the heels down and turn them into brogues and they butch-bling a guy present… or turn them into platform soles and they’re glam rock accessories…They’re just ab-so-lutely GORJUSS!

The salt dough heart was one I made last Christmas. Painted with acrylics, Threaded through with raffia and varnished. Bit sad next to the wonderful tooty booties!

Paperclay Tags

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Not quite the same but similar to the ones on Kirsty’s Homemade Christmas… but am delighted with how they’ve turned out! As Kirsty would say ‘They’re beeeuuuutiful!’ – well I think so anyway.

I made mine with paperclay – it dries in the air so no baking – and snowflake fondant icing molds. Paperclay kneads and rolls smoothly but when you cut out shapes you’ll find it’s quite fibrous and leaves a fuzzy outline of ‘hairs’ or fibres which actually makes for a nice effect.

When they were dry, I coated them with a thin layer of Modge Podge to seal them and that was that. They’re beautifully simple among all the glitz and glamour around at this time of year.  The paperclay says it’s non-toxic (does smell of Germolene though and VERY drying on the hands) but I did wash them thoroughly afterwards so hopefully my cake won’t be the Typhoid Mary of rich fruit cakes round here.

This is a fakey gift I wrapped just to show another tag. The paper is from Paperchase in irridescent gold. The embossed piece in the middle was a little experiment I did with layered newspaper, glued together and coated with Gesso to give it tooth and texture. It was then embossed and inked up with embossing ink and heat embossed with a clear glittery powder. I’m definitely tending towards the plainer and ‘cleaner’ look this year.

Well, those cakes won’t marzipan themselves (though they’ve had every opportunity!) so best be off and get on with them.

Hope you have a happy and relaxing weekend.
