Nearly Christmas

It’s like being on a long journey with kids in the back of the car: ‘Are we nearly there yet?’ except the voice is in my head! It seems so close to the big day yet not so close… does that make sense? In one way I wish it was here and the frantic panic buying and fretting was over… on the other hand there’s so much to do… it’s like a major campaign to manage to some ‘successful’ conclusion (undefined and measured by what?).

Was it always like this?

Maybe, like me, you need some down time and unbend a bit. I hope you’re finding some time to unwind and just maybe enjoy some quiet moments of your own.

It’s supposed to be a merry time  so I wish you a Merry Christmas and a word to the wise, be kind to yourself.

Big Numbers

Can you tell I’m waiting in for a delivery?  I’m keeping myself occupied with doodling around in Illustrator. This little fancy was knocked up in it. I’ll write up the tut in detail should anybody want it but until somebody requests it, I’ll assume you all know! Distort & Transform>Transform to repeat and arrange the triangles around the circumference of the circle, various Christmassy elements placed here and there to please the eye… text converted to outlines and the whole joined together with the Unite Pathfinder tool. Looks fancy and lots of fun.

You can right-click and drag it onto your desktop and use it. I wouldn’t cut it out as some of the ‘welds’ are very fine and flimsy. I haven’t tried printing this one out  – this is a png file – my .ai prints beautifully. Am happy to share the .ai or convert to pdf if you would like it, just let me know.

Now, what does this number represent:  9,223,372,036,854,775,808?

Cost of Christmas this year?! The number of presents you still have to buy? The number of comments I get on this blog (hysterical laughter)?

It’s rudely outrageous and totally beyond my comprehension. Can you imagine such a number? How do you even say it?

I’ll tell you:

Nine quintillion, two hundred and twenty-three quadrillion, three hundred and seventy-two trillion, thirty-six billion, eight hundred and fifty-four million, seven hundred and seventy-five thousand, eight hundred and eight.

Now I’ll tell you what this un gredin (rascal), this unheimlich (unhomely) number – so big and so ugly it should be shut up in a cupboard – stands for, it’s the maximum number of You Tube hits that can now be counted   – You Tube had to let the corsets out on its previous hit counter when Gangnam Style went viral and broke it! Wow! So there’s a challenge for somebody!

Still, Good Goods, it’s not my overdraft and no bothers to me nor you (I hope).

Now to make some gingerbread men…

I’ve got a clan of gingerbread men.
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men.
Take a couple if you wish. They’re on the dish.

Off again, byeeeeeeeeeeee

Christmas and all that jazz!

Not long now! I have wrapping galore to get on with and lots of bits coming from that retail juggernaut, Amazon. It’s so exciting. I’ve also got a freezer coming this week as well – that’s a big wish fulfilled. I have a half ‘n’ half fridge freezer and it doesn’t take that much to fill it. Now I can take advantage of the BOGOFs and cook big portions and freeze half for healthy ready meals. One review described it as ‘ugly’ but aesthetics isn’t (for once – I am primarily form over function) my main consideration. It’s a big white rectangular box that is going to be tucked away and do its job. And it was on sale…

Christmas shopping nearly done except for one! And he is coming to stay for Christmas and has a birthday a couple of days just before the Big Day so am wracking my brains trying to decide what to get him. Not so simples, Nk Nk. And stocking fillers. Hmmmm they can be tough as well.

Still sewing away happily –  have just finished an appliqué pillow for a baby’s room:

The rabbit stencil was initially created in Illustrator then cut from 300 gsm card with my Black Cat cutter (though fussy cutting with scissors wouldn’t be difficult).  Then I got the brilliant idea of fusing an A4 sheet of Bondaweb onto some cotton fabric and used my Cat to cut it! Genius!  So, the rabbits are appliquéd on with Bondaweb but for permanence, I topstitched around their outlines. The fluffy tails are  pom-poms – used a Clover pom-pom maker, possibly the smallest one available – to make them. The spotty heart was fussy cut from Bondawebbed cotton and ironed  then stitched on. Little buttons for the eyes stitched on with embroidery floss and it was done.

Not very Christmassy but sweet and pretty. So to jazz up the post I created this latest graphic using a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop – Illy for the curved lines then PS where the curves were copied as paths so they could be stroked with starry and sparkly brushes.Very snazzy, jazzy, glitzy and glamorous.

Well, busy, busy, busy! Byeeee

Christmas is Coming!

It’s December and Christmas is just a few weeks away and I’m so excited! Though to look out of the window you’d think it was a summer’s day – the sun is streaming in. It’s ‘Gorrr-Juss’ as they say in some parts over here.

I’ve been sewing all sorts of things and using up some stash though the words ‘I have enough fabric to last me for years’ are not words I’ve ever heard a sewist ever say.

What did I make?

Little Christmas tree decorations made from strips of fabric stitched together:

And small stars and bells for a jingly, jolly assortment…

… and a couple of the little elf shoes like this one below:

This is lined and waiting for its hanging loop to be attached. It obviously won’t hold as much as the traditional tall stocking but is good for a bottle of aftershave or perfume and a couple of small things with it. The design was inspired by something like this on the web. I had the template designed in Illustrator, printed and made almost as fast as you can say ‘Fourth Order Polynomial Curve Fitting Algorithm’… It was a bit fiddly – lots of clipping out notches around the curved sections and careful pressing. Not too awful though and the end result was worth it, IMHO.

I also had the bright idea to fuse A4 fabric sheets with Bondaweb and put them through the printer to print applique letters and shapes. Might even try a print and cut with the Cougar…. When there’s a spare moment, that will be done. This weekend,   The Tree goes up and the icicle lights get decked around the outside. I love them! No more than that, just icicles that twinkle and ‘drip’. Gorrr-jussss.

Finally, here’s a design made in Illustrator from a couple of years back – glammed up and richly coloured in red and gold… Christmas is Coming – Glad Tidings!!!!

PS If anyone wants the templates for the stars, trees, etc, drop me a line and I’ll convert the file format for sharing.

Be good, now or you’ll get a lump of coal in your stocking!
