Do you ever find yourself making a card and then realising that by the time you’ve added various borders and edgings and frou-frou that it’s totally non-standard so you have to then custom make the envelope to go with it?!
Well, I got fed up with myself making things difficult so I printed out some paper and envelope sizes to keep as a handy reference. I cut out the list and stitched them onto a normal luggage label with an oddment of edging from my haberdashery stashery so it can be dangled at eye level on my work desk.
The one in the picture was a spur of the moment make while I had the idea in my head…. so I rushed it and flubbed up a little bit. Bleh. No matter, took 5 minutes to make so will make three more, one for my BIA folder you can see in the picture (it has stitched pockets with home-made tags inside… I originally posted it back in 2010 some time), another to stick on the lid of my paper cache and one for my desk.
- If you want to make your own just print off the list of sizes in a font of your choice, maybe tart it up with some fancy frames or borders:
12 x 12 is 304.8 mm x 304.8mm
A6 105 x 148 mm
A5 148 x 210 mm
A4 210 x 297 mm
A3 297 x 420 mm
Common Envelope Sizes
C6 114 x 162 mm
C5 162 x 229 mm
Conversion calculation: Inches to mm: multiply inches by 25.4 to get millimetres.
- Grab a luggage label (or make one with a cutting machine like the CR or Cameo)
- Cut the list out and smear a little Pritt stick on the back just to stick it down on the label (I used pinking shears to cut it out)
- Find a bit of odd lace or trimming and wrap around the label, possibly pin it or just keep it firm using finger pressure and stitch the paper list and trimming onto the label
You could ink around the edges or embellish further. Up to you – but you now have a handy paper and common greeting card envelope size reference.
For information, I use my BIA folder / tags book for all sorts of useful information such as the window/curtain sizes around the house, swatches of fabric from cushion covers (useful if I’m looking for lightshades or accessories), birthdays, jotting ideas for presents so that come Christmas I have a fighting chance of getting something that will be appreciated, light bulbs we use – low power, bayonet/screw, etc, type of air freshener plug ins refills (how many times do you see a special offer then think… ‘Do I have that one or is it a different type?’ … you get the idea! When I want swatches, I just take the tag with the swatches on out of the book and pop it into my bag! Simples!
Hopefully, this isn’t an indication that I’m a***** retentive… I used to be very disorganised until I flubbed up once too often and decided to not waste any more time and energy being so haphazard!
Hope you find the idea useful anyway.
Have a good evening
